There is no question that the ultimate goal of this project is see the LILAC steaming once again, and therefore she would become a purposeful and vital part of our waterfront. Our vision includes seeing her become a service vessel once again, by boarding passengers who will be part of interpretive history or environmental tours. Also, we remain open to causes. Here are just some of the ways we see utilizing the potential for her within the community:
Using her 20 ton crane, ample deck space and maneuverability as a vessel, for environmental or waterfront access projects. Putting in docks and moving out old ones for other non-profits, assisting in waterfront cleaning operations, moving recyclable materials, stowing and casting off small boats for use in youth programs.
Making her a sustainable vessel by utilizing alternative fuel sources (Biodiesel) to become a working example of how a marine vessel can help the environment.
Maritime educational programs for schools and community groups portside, underway and overnights. Including a waterfront classroom for natural environment interpretive education.
By hosting cultural events such as plays, readings, art exhibits and musical concerts.
By making her into a center for youth after school, a meeting place for other activities or a place to catch up on homework. Also, by engaging teens in Service Learning Projects where they investigate a need in the community, educate themselves about the community and the concerns, and develop a plan to meet that need. In the future we hope to install a permanent after-school program for teenagers who will serve as docents for younger kids who board LILAC for educational trips. All while utilizing Lilac however she may be needed; a meeting place, a storage facility, a workshop, and of course as a moving vessel.
Teens, adults and elders, and some veterans will join forces with volunteers and other professionals in maintaining and preserving her aesthetics, structures and systems.
Immediate restoration work on the Forecastle Bunkroom, Galley, Officer’s Cabins, heat and water systems has already begun to prepare these areas for overnight programs, educational day programs, experiential learning activities for scout groups, community organizations and schools.
In summary, we hope to make LILAC a center for a variety of activities for all kinds of people. We hope to accentuate her versatility as a ship by utilizing her decks to meet current needs and concerns for our waterfront, for our communities and its citizens. |
